Crazy, Shocking or just down right odd. Some teams showed up ready to play (Oklahoma, Ohio St. Oregon and Penn St.). Others Sleptwalk to victories (USC, Georgia and Wisconsin). Then some just, well umm sucked somethin awful (Va. Tech. Michigan, Clemson and San Diego St.).

Now time to hand out my Weekly "HAMMIE" awards.....

MVP of the Week: Kevin Craft (UCLA)-How in the world do you throw 4 int's in the first half then lead a comeback..apparently he has the anwser.

Game that I would watch again: Tennessee-UCLA

Coach who's Resume needs to be updated: Ty Willingham (Washington)

Best Team Effort: Fresno St. and Bowling Green for getting Tough road wins.

Worst Team Effort: Michigan, Va. Tech and Clemson. Some extra laps are in need for the last two teams on this list. Michigan showed why the will struggle this year, maybe Pat White should of transfered with Rich-Rod.

Team on the Rise-Colorado, a young team in the Big 12 North that starts out strong. It kind of reminds me of KU last year.

Best Sleepwalking Effort-Kansas and USC. For the Hawks they knew that FIU would not be a test so they went through the motions as expected. USC played to a B- effort and still put up 50+ on UVA. It makes me think, is UVA really that bad?? My anwser, Yes..

A 19 Year Old's View Of Week One

Well, it's finally here. College Football Season will start in less than 24 hours and already upsets are being called and conference title plans are being re-routed and thats just before Labor Day. A big change has occured though as compared to 2007's season start. National Title Contenders are actually gonna get tested in week one (USC, Missouri and LSU). While Other teams get a free pass to a 1-0 record (Ohio St., Oklahoma and BYU). Let's take a deeper look into week 1.

Fav 5 Games (In No Order)

Missouri v. Illinois (In St. Louis)

Last Year's Game went down to the wire, this one will too.

Prediction:Missouri wins 28-21

NC State @ So. Carolina

The SEC Darkhorse gets an early test on Thursday night versus a fiesty Wolfpack team

Prediction:So. Carolina wins 24-14

Tennessee @ UCLA

Tennessee also gets tested early too as they are one of two SEC schools that make a tough trip out west. UCLA is running out of Quarterbacks, can anybody check and see what Cade McNown is doing.

Prediction:Tennessee wins 17-14

Alabama v. Clemson (In Atlanta)

Nick Saban v. Tommy Bowden, this is what college needs to start off week one. Also I would like to see how Julio Jones does vs. a tough Clemson D.

Prediction:Clemson wins 35-24

USC @ Virginia

Mark Sanchez looks healthy coming into this one, so the Trojans will roll.

Prediction:SC Wins 56-17

Team on upset watch-Texas and Virginia

The Big dissapointment this week-Michigan will play very ugly vs. Utah and still win by a very close margin

Man who's Heisman stock will rise-Max Hall (BYU)

Bring Back College Football on ABC!!!!!

With College Football Season coming up you college football fans you always look for what channel is playing what game. The top network is ABC and their College Football brand is a trademark of american sports. About 3 years ago, ABC Sports went in a different direction and did away with ABC Sports and "renamed" it ESPN on ABC. Yea, I know I dont get it either. So of course any sport you see on ABC is really ESPN.

What in the hell is "ESPN on ABC"???? Roone and Howard would not tolerate this..

I honestly believe that the College Football portion has suffered the most from all of this, I mean look what Disney has turned College Football into..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN4XXVEDzoE

Remember when Keith Jackson, Brent Musburger and Brad Nessler had that music behind them, and every game seemed like a conference title matchup. Hell, they could make Stanford-Oregon State look like the Rose Bowl. Well I'll let you take a look...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64rs1GXj4ck

3 QB System?!?!?!?!?!

I found this story from The Oregonian today, its about the ongoing battle for Quarterback for the Oregon Ducks and here's and intresting thing I picked up in that article by way of fannation.com...

Three-QB system at Oregon?
Posted: Thursday August 21, 2008 06:37AM ET
It took the brilliance of Dennis Dixon last season to put an end to the three words -- two-quarterback system -- that haunt many Oregon fans. So, are you ready for . . . a three-quarterback system? "We've been doing it for so long, pretty much since '05," said center Max Unger when asked if three cadences might pose a problem. Nate Costa had pretty much made this a one-quarterback team until last week's scrimmage, when Justin Roper outplayed him. Meanwhile, freshman Chris Harper continues to develop into an offensive force, even if he still has trouble throwing the ball. "We probably would hope that one would get it done," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "If there's other things that a second or third quarterback brings to the table, giving us another way to attack somebody or create another preparation headache for opposing defenses, certainly we'll consider that."

It makes me wonder, can you have a 3 QB system?? In my opinion no, I'm all for giving everyone a shot at the Job but one or two good preformances by the no. 2 and no. 3 guys then you have a Quarterback issue. This article made me think, what other "Multi-QB System" was used in the past

2006-Florida (Chris Leak & Tim Tebow)
To a majority of you Gator fans, there was life before Tim Tebow. Chris Leak was thrown under the bus time after time for not winning the big game. Once he wins the national championship, who get all the credit?? Tim Tebow

Here come the Irish...To Bowl Season????

Last season, Notre Dame went through something I call Samardija-Quinn withdrawl syndrome. The Irish were with out there two best threats, Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardija for the first time in 3 years. The critics of the Irish knew it was going to be tough but not "3 wins" tough, unless your ESPN's Mark May. This is a new season though, and I will say right now that Notre Dame will go to a Bowl Game. Thats right, The Irish will be bowling but it where they will play is the bigger question. Well I will assess the Irish chances of playing in 3 potental games

Bowl Game 1 (The National Championship)
This is inpossible to imagine for Notre Dame but if Notre Dame can get passed there two toughest tests (Pitt and USC) they could be in the picture. The biggest thing blocking them is, as with all Notre Dame teams in the past is.....The Schedule. This young Irish team will stumble on the road or even at home. A 2009 title run is possible if the talent comes along correctly. Chances (7 %)

Bowl Game 2 (A BCS Bowl)
The BCS has not been kind to Notre Dame in the past decade wait, The Bowl season hasnt been kind to Notre Dame in the past 15 years with blowout loss after blowout loss. The BCS is now starting to become accessable to more teams by having 10 teams participate. Notre Dame could afford about 2 or 3 losses to still be in BCS contention. The biggest question for the Irish if they are to make an appearence is will they get another January butt-kicking??
Chances (15%)

Bowl Game 3 (The Gator Bowl)
This is Probably the easiest and most likely bowl destination for the Irish if they play up to there level and win games that there supposed to win, which a majority of them they will. They will be suiting up in Jacksonville on New Years's Day playing an ACC opponent.
Chances (70%)

Pac 10 Conference Preview

In putting the Pac 10 Preview Together, I really "Thought Long and Hard" about it and USC will win the Pac 10 Again. Palmer fired the opening salvo in what should a nice media battle until kickoff, knowingly that he's gonna take some serious heat for it. The Heisman trophy winner from 2002 got off these "Touching" and "Caring" lines...

"I cannot stand the Buckeyes".....

"Having to live in Ohio, and hear what those fans have to say about their team drives me nuts"....

"I just cant wait for them (Ohio St.) to come to the coliseum and get an old fashioned butt whipping"....

As an observer to this mess that Palmer put himself in, I honestly believe that he (Palmer) is the last person who should be saying something or talking crap on another school. If you children remeber Carson Palmer stole the 2002 Heisman (Picture Above) from Miami's Ken Dorsey. For some reason Carson forgot that he's a resident of the state of Ohio and is only less than 100 miles away from..you guessed it Ohio State!!! I would just hope that if Ohio St. does win, Carson isnt on High St. in Columbus that night.

Big 12 Conference Preview

Ok, a quick history lesson for you football fans out there. Before the 2007-08 season, what year did Kansas and Missouri finish 1 and 2 in conference? Anyone....Anyone, it was 1909 while both teams were apart of the Missouri Valley Conference. I dont think that 08-09 will give us a repeat of the 07-08 season, besides KU and MU going to war over the North Division the were many other highlights. Colorado showed that they are a program that is on the rise, Kansas St.'s Jordy Nelson became one of the best WR's to come out of the Big 12 in years. There was also the "Oscar Worthy" preformance by Oklahoma St.'s Mike Gundy. It got me thinking and I started to realize the Tim Tebow is overrated, I know he has a Heisman Trophy but he's just Eric Crouch with a better arm. Then as I was making my case to my cousin Jordan, I was thinking about who, what and in the world of college football is overrated and underrated???

Overrated

Pre Season Magazines-It's not that I dont like them, but can you give me some variety on picking the top team to start the season.

Doug Flutie's Hail Mary-The final play was nice I get that, but Miami was not that good of a team that season, if it was the Irvin, Perriman and Walsh Hurricanes that game would not be on my list. Boston College beat a middle of the road Miami squad, enough said.

Bo Schembechler-Bo may he rest in peice, might have the legendary/iconic status but If you had to rank the top 10 coaches he wont make my list. Woody Hayes and Bo had good battles in the 70's but after Woody left OSU, Bo couldnt take over the conference as many expected

Cal-Stanford "The Play"-Yep, I went there. We all know what happens, Cal takes the kickoff back after making an endless amount of laterals then stick it in the Cardinal by running over the Trombone player. What people forget is the previous drive by Stanford and John Elway, Elway converted on fourth down deep in his own territory to capture the lead but Kevin Moen and Cal ruined that the next play

Underrated

The Pac-10-America needs to remember this conference before USC took over this decade, the Pac 10 was very good in the 90's and into the early 2000's. (See Joey Harrington, Marques Tuiasosopo, Danny O'neil and Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar)

Black College Football-This is something else that america needs to wake up to, NFL Hall of Famers and Super Bowl MVP's have played at this level. Take a look at the start of the season, while you Texas fans are watching the horns thrash some no-name school Grambling St. and Hampton will be in action showcasing their talent on various ESPN networks

Nebraska-Penn St in 1982-This was a game between two top 10 teams and went back and fourth until a late Todd Blackledge TD that was actually out of bounds costs Tom Osborne a shot at a national title, and who played in the title game that year....Penn St.

Big Ten Conference Preview

No team, and no coaches' reputation has fallen off the face of the earth more than Michigan and Rich Rodriguez. Rodriguez left West Virgnia to go to his "Dream Job". None the less, his first year has already gotten off on the wrong foot (Tyrell Pryor spurned michigan for the Rival, Ryan Mallett left and a key O-Lineman transfers to Ohio St.). Boston College and Virgina Tech were top dog along with an unproven Clemson team. This Season could be the Tigers year as they will finally make a strong run at the ACC title. Harper was to attend Kansas St. in the fall, but then backed out of his commit and decided on national signing day to go to Oregon. He gave an exclusive interview with us

Andrew Hammond:What other schools did you have in mind other than KSU and Oregon?

Chris Harper:I had Missouri, Illinios and Notre Dame on my list.

AH:Do you feel like Kansas St. betrayed you?

CH:There was nothing they could do about it, Coach [James] Franklin has famliy in Maryland so he was doing what was best for him.

AH:Did you consider Maryland?

CH:Yeah, I though about it but I decided not to go after it.

AH:What made Oregon so intresting?

CH:The Offense, I like the version of the Spread Offense how it's very balanced

AH:What was a key factor in your decision

CH:Coaching and QB tradition, they have a very strong tradition there. The last seven starting QB's have all played in the NFL at some time and Coach [Chip] Kelly is a real cool and I like what he was doing with Dennis Dixon last season

AH:What places are you looking forward to in the Pac 10 on the road?

CH:I'm looking forward to UCLA, its the Rose Bowl. Also, I'm wanting to go to USC and Arizona St.

AH:At one point Notre Dame was serious about you, what were your impressions of ND?

CH:The campus is really nice and I like Coach Weis, but it was just too small.

Weekly Preview:Here it goes again....

On Wednsday, Duke coming in at 2nd in the country will face their longtime rivals from Chapel Hill in a showdown that is probably the first in a three part series. The next on in Durham and most likely in the ACC Tournament final . The last time these two played, this happend..http://youtube.com/watch?v=O5glRSAUVCQ I have a feeling that Gerald Henderson will get a warm welcome into the Dean Dome that night. Duke @ No. Carolina ESPN-Wednsday (Come on, its Duke-Carolina..The Grammys can wait)

2. Gonzaga @ St. Mary's ESPN-Monday (The West Coast Conference's two best teams go at it late into the night on Big Monday)

3. UConn @ Syracuse ESPN-Wednsday (A huge matchup between two teams rising in the Big East)

4. Drake @ Illinois State No TV-Tuesday (It's a shame that the biggest game in the Missouri Valley Confernce will not be shown on TV)

5. Tom Coughlin went after the undeafeated Patriots and almost pulled of the biggest upset in NFL history, only if it wasnt for a couple of missed assignments that New England scored on. I believe that Eli grew up that game, he dominated in Tampa, he made TO cry and ruinned Brett Favre's dream season. Can he beat Bill Belicheck and Tom Brady?? well vegas gives them no chance, they are a 14 underdog. Kansas, North Carolina and Memphis are all no.1 seeds as of right now and look to be heading straight for the final four, but will they still be undefeated??. Kansas is probably the most talented, North Carolina is the most proven and Memphis has the most to prove.
Memphis has the easiest road by playing in Conference USA and they're only mid season test will come versus Tennessee on Feb. 23rd. They do have potential trap games at Houston and UAB but they should fly through those pretty easily.
If I had to award a "Best team in the Regular season" award Kansas would get it every year, but we dont have awards like that, thank god. Kansas has everything in front of them right now, a top team, good quality wins and most importantly good coaching. The biggest thing for them is putting it together in march, we all know how they great they have done in March. The Tar Heels showed on saturday why their No. 1 ranking is safe and secure. While they had a 25-0 run versus NCST, they just played solid defense and put together great transition offense (2 keys to winning a national title). The only thing stopping them from going undefeated, a 4 letter word....DUKE.

Andrew's Top 5 Games this week

1. USC@UCLA, Saturday-(OJ v. Thats when LSU woke up and came back with a 24-0 run to end the half. In the second half the tigers continued to pound away with long sustained drives and by the time it was 31-10 people were going out of the Superdome and heading to the parking lot. LSU ended up winning, but there is more to this than people think. Once again OSU disappoints and the Big Ten is blasted by the SEC again.
Jim Tressel, AKA "sweater vest" gave his team a dvd that had ten minutes of negative footage towards his team from the talking heads around the country Including me (Just kidding). They had a whole year to remember what happened last time they were in a national title game and do you know what they learned...NOTHING!!!!. The Big Ten should be embarssed by what they have become, ESPN's Kirk Herbstriet said that the Big 10, in the fans eyes is around the Conference USA/MAC level. I know that sounds far fetched but it might be true, here's how I see the top BCS conferences (1. SEC, 2. PAC 10, 3. Big 12, 4. ACC, 5. Big East, 6. Big 10). The Big 10 needs to look at themselves in the mirror and and think what do they need to do. Not just with Ohio St. but with the other ten teams in the 11 team conference. Here are some thing I have thought about...

1. Bring another team into the conference (i.e. Notre Dame, I know it's impossible but wortha shot)
2. Schedule tougher games across the board (No App. St, or Youngstown St.)
3. Play a conference championship game (Same thing for the Pac 10 and Big East)
4. Move out of the 20th century (People pass the ball now and they have things called recivers, know how to use one of these)

Thats the only advice I can give them...but since the season is over. Time to reveal my "Unoffical AP top 25 voting ballot"

1.LSU
2.Georgia
3.USC
4.West Virgina
5(t).Kansas
5(t).Missouri
7.Ohio St.
8.Va. This years version of the BCS has shown us that going soft is the way to go and if you play the bottom of the barrel you will be rewarded with a shot at the BCS. A couple of years ago, Mark Mangino lost to texas and after the game he said that the BCS played a factor in the loss. I have a strong feeling that after this season McGino probably wants to rethink his thoughts on the BCS. He got around the system and won he figured if Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech aren't on the schedule, lets put every bottom feeder we can on our 07 schedule. Kansas is not the only one has done it this Ohio St. and Hawaii cupcaked there way to the BCS. Ohio St. probably was alot worse in there 07 Non-con Schedule, teams like Youngstown st. KentSt. and Akron go the buckeyes ready for the big 10. Once they got into Big 10 play they face and Illinois and got lost. Hawaii, who played absolutely nobody got rolled up by Georgia.

If I was in Charge Of Ku and Hawaii's Schedule for next season it would go like this, I would keep the Conference Schedules the same but I would make up Non-Conference schedules.

Kansas

08/30/08
The past two weeks have given us alot to talk about on The Andrew Hammond Show, but butler is on winter break right now so I cannot be on the air. If the show did go on, we could possibly have a 4 hour show with all of the good stuff that happened since mid-december.

Most of you reading this are in the state of Kansas so I will say this one more time, Kansas Will get Killed by Va. Tech in the Orange Bowl. One to my thoughts ...

Right now Memphis is the No. 1 Team in the country, they're reward for a brutal non-conference schedule, C-USA. You gotta Love it.

The LA Lakers didnt need to wear the old school booty shorts vs the Boston Celtics, that set basketball back forty years.

Speaking of setting things back, The Jets-Chiefs game set Football back 80 years. While they were in that boat race, they of called Red Grange or Jim Thorpe and see if they wanted to get in on action.

Dec. 31 of 2007 was they perfect way to describe the college football season, it aint over till its over.

It must suck to be from or associated with the city of Cleveland.

Props to the NE Patriots for going undefeated throughout the season, but it doesn't matter if they dont win a super bowl.

Lloyd Carr stuck it to all of the anti-Carr movement by beating Florida in the Capitol One Bowl, with Rich Rodriguez standing less than 100 feet away.

Rick Neuhisel going to UCLA, hey Rick, are you going to have an NCAA Tournament Pool? If so. then I'm in.

Tim Tebow cannot win the big game, period.

Brian Billick's status as a genius is under review. I do like Troy Smith being the QB of the Ravens Future though, I see shades of Donovan McNabb.

Wichita St. is going to have a Long season, and I mean Looooonnnnnggggg.....

KU and UNC basketball, very questionable right now. Bill self and Roy Williams, you need to play teams that will get you ready for March. Not Penn, Ohio and Loyola. This College Basketball not debate..

Bowl Season Fan Reactions....

Well, with bowl season upon us, there is optimism in the air as some schools have headed into uncharted waters (Kansas). If this week was any indication of how they are doing you would have thought that they were in "mid-march mode" as they have both had undefeated starts and got huge wins over ranked opponents. Texas defeated UCLA in the Pac 10-Big 12 Hardwood series at Pauley Pavillion and earlier beat Tennessee. Duke won the Maui Invitational by defeating Marquette in the final, the devils also have wins over Wisconsin, Illinois.

The Longhorns are doing very well by having DJ Augustin and AJ Abrams leading the way and with the loss of Kevin Durant, Texas seems more balanced. Right now I see Augustin as a top 5 finalist for the Wooden Award.

The last time most of america saw the Duke Blue Devils, they were being defeated by the VCU rams in the 1st Round of the NCAA tournament. This year the devils seem to be on a rampage and using methods of the Phoenix Suns offense, PG Greg Paulus has made strong improvements over the off-season. Kyle Singler has done an excellent job buy my favorite freshman so far is Nolan Smith, he reminds me of a young Chris Duhon.

If these two teams have this same kind of success in March Look out.....

The BCS, more like WTF.....

Everything started out good on the BCS selection show, untill the Orange Bowl was announced Virginia Tech vs Kansas. On the BCS Selection Show, Fox Analyst Charles Davis said it best,"Kansas deserves all the accolades this season, except this one". I fully agree, while KU is in the Orange Bowl, Missouri (KU's only loss) gets to play in the Cotton Bowl. Kansas does not deserve a BCS bowl because (1. They didnt play anybody ranked up until the Mizzou game. (2. The non-conference schedule ranked 109th in country. (3. They didn't Win there own Division.

The sad thing is that wasn't the only screwed up thing that happend that night. Ohio St. gets into the BCS Title game by default. Just because the Buckeyes had a weak schedule (Akron, Youngstown St. and Kent St.) and played in a horrible Big 10 (Illinois is the best team in that conference). For the second year in a row there is a Big 10 vs. SEC Matchup in the National Title Game. Ohio St. Vs. LSU. Here's a key stat, Ohio St. is 0-8 versus SEC teams in bowl games.

The best game in the BCS is in the Sugar Bowl, Hawaii versus Georgia. Colt Brennan willl get the toughest test of his career as he will go against a top 10 defense in Georgia. The Warriors will have all of the weapons but can they Pull off the upset.

BCS Matchups

Rose Bowl -USC v. Illinois
Sugar Bowl-Jan 1. Hawaii v. Georgia
Fiesta Bowl-West Virgina v. Oklahoma
Orange Bowl-Kansas v. VA. Tech
BCS Title Game-LSU v.
